Masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery
There probably is no other collection of masterpieces in the world as great as the one in the Uffizi. This art museum located in Florence, Italy has been collecting art work since the 13th century. Originally built to house the offices of the Magistrates of Florence, the Uffizi Gallery is now known the world over for it's 45 rooms of prestigious art. The self portraits of the artists, alone are worth the visit to this majestic gallery. Many of the portraits were gifts presented by the artists themselves. There were 250 offered in the 20th century. This just added to the vast collection already on display.

One of the points of interest in the Uffizi Gallery is the collection of miniatures. There are 1,392 pieces in the collection. This is the second largest in the world. Originally used to illustrate books, the miniature portrait became sought after for decoration in the early 1500's.

Some of the masterpieces which adorn the walls of the Uffizi include works like Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and Primavera. These two great works of art are the essence of the Renaissance Era. There are 27 great paintings like this on the first floor in the room 10-14.

Each room offers a beautiful collection of works from some of the most famous painters and sculptures in history. You can find works from artisans like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Caravaggio. Even the infamous Statue of David is housed within the walls of the Uffizi Gallery.

You will be able to see some of the finest 14th century paintings from Florentine artists. You can go back another century and take in the works of Giotto and Duccio. Many of the pieces in Room 2 depict the art of this era.

Touring the Uffizi can take hours. There is so much to see. The rooms are arranged to chronologically display Florentine art through the centuries. The masters who created each work come from many parts of the world. However most of the artwork being presented in the Uffizi is from artists of the Florence area. Even the architecture of the building is attributed to one of the great architects of the 1500's, Giorgio Vasari. You may find the design and highlights of the building as fantastic as the art work it holds.

To be able to gain access to the Uffizi Gallery you may want to make reservations. During the winter months the lines at the doors may not be so long. However, during the summer, you can wait for many hours to get inside. With only a limited number of visitors at a time being allowed in, the line can form quickly and be very long. By calling a few days ahead to make a reservation, you can bypass the waiting public and go directly in at your appointed time. There is a small fee to make the reservation, but with a vacation itinerary to meet you may find it is well worth paying the charge. Otherwise, you may not be able to even get in during certain times.
